Renouncement of castration of male pigs – Introduction and establishment of boar fattening in the supply chain pork production

Project description

The meat of fattening boars can be contaminated by sex-related boar teint. To avoid this undesirable effect, male piglets are being castrated after birth. The conducted surgical castration method is performed without sedation and is said to be painful for the piglets. Starting 01 January 2019 the amendment of the German Animal Welfare Act will take effect and the surgical castration has to be conducted by using sedation and anaesthetization. By that time alternatives for practical use have to be developed and presented to the pig producers. The present EIP aims to transfer the fattening of young boars as an alternative of the surgical castration without sedation into the supply chain of pork meat in regard of the new regulations of the Animal welfare act.

Focused strategies in the project are:
- Application of new breeding methods to reduce boar taint
- Establishment of welfare oriented animal husbandry
- Exclusion of qualitative deficiencies of boar meat by using new technologies
- Use of public relations to launch and appreciate the new product
