Nutrient-efficient land concepts for grassland sites
In the first half of the project, two areas on each of six pilot farms were comprehensively surveyed with regard to dry matter yields, fertilization measures, and samples of farmyard manure and fresh grass. In addition, soil tests were carried out, including profile assessments, analyses of undisturbed and disturbed samples, infiltration measurements, and field shear tests. The grass cover was assessed and the yield shares of the first cut were estimated.
Based on this data, a weakness analysis was carried out and adapted concepts were developed and tested. In addition, the Chamber of Agriculture, Kiel University of Applied Sciences, and Kiel University set up precise trials and strip plots on practical areas to investigate questions relating to farmyard manure and its influence on nitrogen inputs into groundwater.
The data collection enabled a site-specific assessment of the location characteristics and yield potential of the pilot areas. Until now, there has been no reliable information on grassland yields on practical areas in northern Germany – the project has provided new insights in this regard.
Based on the measured values, nitrogen and phosphorus balances were also created, which were improved during the course of the project. Valuable data on the compaction status of permanent grassland in Schleswig-Holstein was also collected. Despite initial indications of structural damage, permanent grassland shows greater compensation potential for soil compaction than arable land. Further insights were gained from testing site-adapted land use concepts.
