Regional production of sustainable pig feed using insect larvae and study of the effect on growth and animal welfare
Concept development
With insect larvae of the black soldier fly (BSF), expansive protein feeds such as soy or fish meal can be replaced with regionally and sustainably produced feeds. Regional production opens the possibility for farmers to produce their own protein feed. In addition, it makes it possible to feed live and unprocessed larvae. This corresponds to the natural feeding behavior of many farm animals. The use of live feed and the high-quality amino acid spectrum of the larval protein has the potential to improve animal welfare and health in a natural way. So far, however, there is no practical experience regarding this method of feeding. Under of this project the first recommendations regarding feasibility and profitability of a regional insect production and use as feed in pig farming are developed.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
