Appreciation, value creation and valorisation of environmental services in organic fruit growing
The project aims to identify and describe the environmental services of organic fruit growing and to translate them into a communication concept for market participants. Using research results and field surveys as a basis, experiences are to be bundled and the interactions of environmental services on the product quality of apples, marketability and consumer acceptance are to be recorded. In cooperation with representatives along the entire value chain, concepts will be discussed and developed that highlight the interrelationships and environmental services of systemic organic farming and make them comprehensible.
Topics will be discussed in 4 work packages:
- Quality / grades: scientific processing/data collection on consumer acceptance of skin defects and their influence on shelf life, sooty blotch, evaluation of the microbiome on the apple surface.
- Biodiversity performance on farms
- Varietal diversity/strategy (apple): Development of a marketing concept with focus on varietal diversity
- Soil: Recording of the different practice strategies and development of recommendations for action
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
On the one hand, the results obtained contribute to a further establishment and increase of environmental measures on fruit farms.
Measures to promote biodiversity in orchards are implemented only hesitantly by some farms, as it is feared that slight skin defects could then increasingly occur on the fruit, which would reduce the external quality of the produce. On the basis of the results, further instructions for action and more certainty in practical application will be provided.
For the farms, switching to scab-robust varieties means a possibility to save on pesticides in the long term while increasing production reliability. The project also brings the topic of soil into focus. The farms are provided with alternative fertiliser strategies and recommendations for action through the integrated advisory service.
On the other hand, the communication strategies developed should enable the farms and their bundlers to enhance the value of their products on the mark
