High-quality protein feed from lucerne
There is a lack of sufficient quantities of protein-rich local products that can replace soy for animal feed. Organic farming is particularly affected, because organic farms will in future cover their feed supply exclusively from their own or regional production. This makes drought-tolerant and humus-building lucerne increasingly interesting for cultivation in Brandenburg, even under the conditions of advancing climate change.
The HEILU project is investigating the production of high-performance fodder from lucerne and legume-grass mixtures with the lowest possible CO2 footprint under practical conditions. This includes the new design of cultivation methods and harvesting strategy as well as conservation. A good crude protein yield with high cutting intensity achieved by lucerne when it grows in dense stands. The HEILU project partners are developing a guide for forage production that describes the process from cultivation to harvesting and drying for practical use.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
