IT-based selection of dairy cows for selective dry-off (OG: MastiSelekt)
This project aims at developing and evaluating a data- and IT-based decision-making algorithm for selective dry-off of dairy cows in large herds. The algorithm should be able to use data from different sources which are relevant for the assessment of the cow's individual mastitis risk (somatic cell count, results of bacteriological cultivation, clinical mastitis, herd data). This should enable producers to identify cows for those antibiotic therapy at dry off is essential. Based on the present knowledge, the algorithm should allow the calculation of a risk score for the assessment of the mastitis risk in case of selective dry off. Therefore, a database for storing and processing of information regarding udder health, interfaces for an automatic data transfer and a device-independent user interface that allows manual data input as well should be developed. The algorithm and the software should be tested and refined in five dairy herds with good udder health using a case-control study design and considering the diagnostic value of pathogenicity factors. Results will be presented at meetings and in publications to transfer the knowledge to farmers and veterinarians.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
We expect the approach to have a significant impact on the dissemination of selective dry cow treatment, by making the practical implementation easier especially in large herds of dairy cattle and herds with automatic milking systems. The udder health analysis tool is expected to reduce additional work regarding the selection of eligible cows by monthly providing extra information. Thereby, the implementation of selective dry-off in dairy herds should be promoted and the use of antibiotics should be reduced without impairment of udder health at individual and herd level. The results of the project will help to facilitate an economically viable, productive and climate-friendly agricultural sector with an efficient use of resources and a consistent and sustainable supply of save food.
