Climate-Farm-balance: Quantification of sources and opportunities to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions (GHGs) in Agri- and Viticulture
The Rhineland-Palatinate region is well known for ist agricultural and viticultural practices. These agricultural systems contribute to GHG emissions such as CO2, Methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). With these emissions agriculture plays a crucial role in climate change. On the one hand gases are released but depending on the practices, agriculture also hast he capacity to store CO2 in carbon sinks such as deposition of humic matter or through agropastoral farming systems, thus contributing to a reduction in GHG emissions. In our EIP-project, we aim to develop a simple tool that can help farmers calculate their GHGbalances. Following the approach of Climate smart agriculture (CSA), it is possible to offer counsel to individual farmers and thus decrease emissions of GHGs whilst maintaining or even increasing economic values. In addition, we focus on the adaptation of the tool in order to calculate emissions of vineyard work and wine production as well. Apart from benefiting the single farmer, the tool will allow to deepen the understanding of GHG calculations in agriculture in general, and it will provide valid information leading to more transparency for companies and custome
