Improvement of Bavarian piglet production with sustainable and animal welfare oriented selection in closed-herd farms
Bavaria is characterized by a high proportion of closed-herd piglet producers, who so far only benefit from genetic progress via the boar side. The aim of the project is to enable breeding progress on the sow side with the help of genomic selection. Additionally the occurrence of hereditary defects shall be reduced and the genetic resistance to certain production diseases shall be increased. For this purpose the farms genotype the relevant sows and carry out genomic mating planning. As a result of this procedure genetic defects shall be reduced, the use of resources improved and the dependence of Bavarian farmers to the breeding decisions of international concerns shall decreased.
The project was highly appreciated by the participating farms. With regard to breeding progress, significant increases were recognizable. Sows born in 2019 had a breeding value of 87 while those born in 2022 had an average value of 112. Being able to select young sows according to individual criteria was new for the farmers and of great importance. By providing individual breeding values, each farm was able to determine its own criteria for the selection of progeny. Above all, the mating programme, which recommends to the farm managers the best boars for their own sows with just one click, was very well appreciated by the members of the OG. The typing showed its importance regarding the result of the deviations of individual animals from their previously estimated parental breeding value. The targeted use and production of their own sows enables the farms to significant save resources.
