Project Title

ENEGÜLL - innovative digestate processing technology

Project description

The project transferred a proven technology for digestate treatment to three biogas plants on agricultural farms. These differed in terms of farming methods and input materials. One plant was already in operation at the start of the project, with two more following during the course of the project.

The farms worked closely with consultants, scientists, and the plant manufacturer and provided important practical experience. Substrate samples were taken every 14 days, analyzed in the laboratory, and compared with test results. In addition, material flows were recorded and evaluated.

The plant technology was continuously adapted and further developed in line with new findings, including the replacement of technical components.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The treatment of slurry and manure prior to the biogas plant proved to be practical and forward-looking. Part of the corn input could be replaced by slurry and manure, while at the same time producing defined fertilizer products. Originally, the focus was on obtaining ammonium sulfate solution (ASL), but practical experience led to the development of sulfuric acid ammonia (SSA) – a product that can be stored more easily, reducing the need for storage capacity. All farms benefited from savings in storage.

Laboratory tests showed how the changed substrate composition affects microbiology – in some cases with significant effects on biogas yield. Based on these results, concrete recommendations for practical application were derived and successfully implemented. This made it possible to change the feed without any major losses in biogas production.
