Animal welfare check cattle

Project description

Based on scientific findings and practical requirements, the operational group developed a practical indicator system for recording animal welfare in barns. It drew on the results of the nationwide projects “Q Check” and “EiKoTiGer” and supplemented these with indicators from the farming environment.

A web-based app was developed and tested in pilot farms to facilitate data collection on the animals. In addition, an e-learning module was created to teach users how to apply the indicators uniformly with the help of instructions, information sheets, and examples. Information events rounded off the project and provided an opportunity for exchange with relevant stakeholder groups on the topic of animal welfare.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The “Animal Welfare Check” web application enables farmers to quickly and regularly analyze animal welfare directly at the animal in the barn. By connecting to the database of the State Control Association (including milk control results and HI-Tier data), existing information is automatically evaluated. The current livestock population is displayed on a daily basis, and the app automatically calculates a random sample number of animals – adjusted to the herd size.

A clearly structured menu guides users step by step through the survey. Animals are assessed by selecting the barn number, life number, or animal name and clicking on illustrated indicator characteristics. The app automatically evaluates the results and presents them to users in a clear format.
