Investigation of moulting and endoparasite load as well as preparation of a breeding value estimation in Saxon poultry breeds ("Dresdnerhuhn")
To generate data on fattening, slaughtering and laying performance as well as egg quality for the preparation of a breeding value estimation and as livestock for the investigation of the moulting concept and the endoparasite load, two local dual-purpose breeds of Saxony are used:
1) Dresdner Huhn as a high performance Saxon native breed with cultural and historical importance for regional breed poultry production.
2) Dwarf Dresdner as a Saxon dwarf chicken breed with positive performance expectations.
Market hybrid laying hens for egg production and a slow-growing broiler origin for meat production serve as control groups. All groups are kept in an extensive free-range system.
With the findings on performance and animal welfare indicators, a robust basis exists to establish regional niche production with these breeds. Animal health plans for pedigree chickens are optimized by means of the findings on endoparasitic load. With the testing of a concept for targeted laying pause, statements can be made about the suitability of this in pedigree chickens and recommendations for action can be given.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
As soon as available, the results will be presented here.
