Seed health of organic grain with focus on bunt and dwarf bunt
Seed-borne cereal diseases can be effectively controlled in conventional agriculture using chemical-synthetic seed dressings. In organic farming, however, this application is not permitted. Instead, a combined approach involving the use of resistant varieties, organic seed treatment methods and preventive agronomic measures must be used. Seed-borne diseases therefore pose a challenge in this cultivation system. The aim of the project is to contribute to the improvement and sustainable safeguarding of the health status of organic cereal seed in Hesse and beyond. The focus here is on the seed-borne blight diseases stone blight and dwarf stone blight in wheat, and leaf blight in barley. Measures to supplement and optimise the advisory services and seed monitoring in Hesse are to be tested and put into practice. Particular attention will be paid to the race-specific effectiveness of resistance genes and the risk of pathogens overcoming resistance.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
