Development of an innovative concept for sustainable sheep and goat farming in North Rhine-Westphalia
Sheep and goat farming, with its small-scale farming methods and extensive grazing, is a particularly animal and environmentally friendly form of animal husbandry. The number of commercial farms has been declining for years. Sheep and goat farming cannot be run sustainably in most regions due to low profitability and the difficult marketing situation. The sheep and goat breeding associations in NRW and around 30 farms want to ensure sustainable farming methods. To this end, the current economic situation, including the marketing channels, is determined. The farms are then assessed for sustainability on the basis of a number of selected criteria in line with the DBU project “The Sustainability Code of Agriculture”. Farm-specific innovation strategies based on a SWOT analysis and the sustainability analysis are developed and tested. As a result of the sustainability analysis, the economic evaluation and the optimization of marketing channels, a manual of measures for sustainable and future-proof sheep and goat farming in North Rhine-Westphalia will be developed and published.
