Value-added chain of domestic soya in Hesse
There is a need to increase the usage of declared domestic animal feed. The consumer demand for animal-based food which is produced with the use of domestic animal feed is rising. Livestock farms react to this demand and increase their efforts to use domestic animal feed. Furthermore, the requirements of society in regard to an environment- and climate-friendly, multifunctional agriculture as well as the interests of Hessian farmers, support the approach to increase the production of declared domestic animal feed. Additionally, the production of soya in Hesse is becoming economically attractive due to climate change and breeding progress. Until now a variety of specific information is not available which is necessary to install a target-oriented and economically sustainable regional value-added chain. Furthermore, logistical and organisationally adapted structures as well as quality assurance have to be created to ensure that the relevant actors are involved. The aim of the project is to eliminate deficits along the value-added chain of domestic soya ‘from the harvest to the feeding trough’.
The demand for soy as animal feed in organic farming is far higher than what is currently cultivated in Hesse. Own analyses of the OG showed that a cost-effective and mobile processing plant delivers very good qualities at the same time. The plant in question was invited to Gut Marienborn to process soy from the member farms. In a third step, an overview of possible organizational and legal forms that make sense for the operation of a soy processing plant was compiled. The calculations suggested an organic growth for farmers. This means, it is economical to initially process organic soy using a mobile plant from a contractor before investing in your own plant in the medium term. Overall, it is important that every step in the value chain takes place in Hessen so that the end product is accepted as Hessian/domestic. For this the OG proposes the connection to the organic label HESSEN.
