GROW - Grassland maintenance with robot operated laser weeding
Primeval production in permanent grassland requires an economical weed control method suitable for organic farming that fundamentally transforms the treatment of problem weeds such as ragwort. Problem weeds can only be controlled with manual labor in nature reserves, such as FFH - and water protection areas. Thus, existing solutions are not economically sustainable. In addition, the treatment of problem weeds is of high relevance for animal welfare, since some of them contain toxic plants that are worthless in terms of forage. The conflicting goals of economic efficiency and conservation objectives are to be resolved in GROW. So the animal husbandry as well as forage salvage can become competitive without pesticides and reduced manual labor. The goal of the project is to develop an autonomous robot, which will be equipped with a non-contact and wear-free laser tool to reduce manual labor. This tool will be used for growth control or lethal damage of unwanted plants and can be applied selectively as well as precisely dosed without significant impact on the further flora and fauna.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
