Mulching vegetables - Economic vegetable cultivation in a natural mulching system
Vegetable growing is highly specialised and is concentrated in individual geographical areas with a good water infrastructure. The regional self-sufficiency rate for vegetables in Central Hessen is rather low. The combined mulch method trialled in the project (application of the transfer mulch and the in-situ mulch method) combines aspects of soil-building vegetable production. It involves minimum tillage, intensive intercropping and protective soil cover with organic mulch, which offers a number of advantages such as reduced water evaporation and weed control. In order to counteract the problem of the increased labour involved in mulch planting, a MulchTec Planter for mechanical planting has already been developed, a technique for planting young plants in an existing mulch layer. The aim of the project is to be able to produce high-quality, regional vegetables with ecological added value at similar prices to conventional vegetables. This should enable arable farms to include vegetable crops in their crop rotation in order to expand the product range in regions with little vegetable cultivation.
