BONA Baking wheat without nitrate leaching
In practice of wheat marketing, it is established to equal baking quality with raw protein content.
Therefore, industry pays advanced prices for higher raw protein contents.
Farmers fertilize large amounts of nitrogen (N) to reach high row protein contents.
The N-fertilization takes place in several portions, recently from ear emergence to flowering.
One quarter of the agricultural production land in Rhineland-Palatinate is dedicated to the cultivation of wheat.
The insufficient uptake of nitrogen based on the last fertilization immediately prior to the flowering contributes significant to nitrate pollution of waters.
For this reason, there is increasing criticism of the common quality rating.
In Field trials, varieties are searched, which achieve high baking qualities with less N-fertilizer and high nitrogen efficiency.
Resultant varieties and efficient fertilizing recommendations should be integrated in wheat cultivation.
The decisive criterion for quality assessment should be the variety instead of the raw protein content.
On the basis offield trials it was checked whether and how different wheat varieties differ in their N efficiency, in grain yield and in their quality properties ander the influence of according to the German fertilization ordinance permitted and 20% reduced Nfertilizer amounts. As a result ofthe exact tests, it can be stated that modern E compared to A varieties have a slightly better N efficiency. Atthesame time, even with reduced Nfertilization, they still have baking qualities comparable to A varieties with the permissible N fertilization. In the practical trials, at most, small reductions in yield could befoundby cultivating E varieties with the same Nfertilization asfor the A varieties. The N-fertilization of modern, N-efficient wheat varieties of quality group E at the same level asforA varieties leads to minor disadvantages economically. This would have to be compensatedfor by a variety-specific, only slightly different payment instead ofone based on the raw protein content.
