Efficient, specific crop production by LEDs
Light significantly increases the primary agricultural production in greenhouses. However, the contribution of the current high pressure sodium lamps to plant growth is inefficient. In addition, a lot of greenhouses in Brandenburg and Berlin are closed during winter, because of the lack of light and the high consumption of electricity. The lack of light has negative effects on yield and quality of plants. The aim of the project is to develop a modular and cost-efficient LED light system in line with the plants needs. The horizontal and vertical arranged LED light system shall be used for the greenhouse production year-round. The project takes natural light into account. The quality, the resistance and the yield of the tested plants shall be increased and the time for cultivating shall be reduced by the use of the LED light system. Different settings of LEDs have to be tested on specific herbs and ornamental plants on a all-year basis. The focus is on productivity and profitability. A pilot farm, information services and workshops ensure the transfer of knowledge.
The competitive and sustainable cultivation of herbs and ornamentals is a special challenge
for the horticultural businesses producing in the Berlin/Brandenburg region: The continental
climate with cold winters and warm summers makes only protected cultivation profitable. At
the same time, due to the northern location of the region, assimilation lighting must ensure that
the photoperiod is sufficiently extended. In the past, this was only possible with the help of high
energy consumption HPS lamps, which further reduced the margin of the cultivated crops. The
use of LED systems for assimilation lighting and their application on several vertical levels
have a decisive influence on the competitiveness of Brandenburg's horticulture. By using specific
light recipes, the quality of the plants produced was positively influenced in terms of ingredients
and quality.
