Development of an optical method for the diagnosis of pathogens in fruit
The aim is to develop an electronic warning system with automated diagnosis of pathogens of important plant diseases; a "pathosensor". The detection of pathogens together with the determination of the optimal time for treatment can reduce the use of pesticides in orchards by up to 80%. At the same time, plant protection can be improved.
Spores of the apple scab pathogen Venturia inaequalis are to be detected and quantified. For this purpose, a prototype of the "pathosensor" will be developed for installation in orchards. This consists of a box that sucks spores from the air and a special optical system that detects the spores. These are identified and counted using artificial intelligence. Then a software calculates the risk of infection with further data and creates a specific treatment recommendation.
The system permanently monitors the orchards and the grower receives the recommendations in real time. The result is a warning system with maximum safety that is also environmentally friendly, as high efficiencies are possible and superfluous treatments can be dispensed with.
The apple scab pathosensor is intended to serve as a model for other applications.
