Microalgae biomass from municipal wastewater treatment as fertilizer in agriculture
Municipal wastewater contains many nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. To prevent these nutrients from entering the environment and polluting aquatic ecosystems, wastewater is currently treated using technical processes. Conventional treatment methods cause high CO2 emissions. The project is investigating the use of microalgae biomass to bind nutrients from municipal wastewater. Unlike conventional treatment processes, this method consumes less energy. At the same time, the algae can be used as fertilizer in agriculture after the treatment process. This reduces the need for conventional fertilizer. In this way, regional cycles can be closed. To this end, microalgae biomass is produced in a pilot plant. The fertilizing effect is tested in the laboratory, greenhouse, and fields. Possible pollutants from the wastewater are also investigated. Particular challenges lie in the seasonal dependence of algae production and the legal classification of biomass.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
