Improving the added value from the fattening performance of purebred bulls of the German Holstein breed
The sustainable increase in the regional added value of male calves and young bulls of the German Holstein (HF) breed requires innovative rearing and fattening methods. Therefore, the performance potential of purebred HF young bulls is tested under practical conditions. Based on the results of the project, alternative concepts in terms of genetics and marketing are to be developed for specialized bull fatteners in North Rhine-Westphalia in the face of dwindling resources. The suitability of these animals under existing husbandry and marketing concepts will initially be determined by consistently recording performance parameters from calf to young bull ready for slaughter. In addition, the extent to which animal welfare and the use of resources in the rearing and fattening of HF young bulls can be improved through optimized husbandry, feeding and management in the first weeks of life as well as alternative marketing concepts will be investigated. Recommendations for the sustainable marketing of regionally produced premium HF young bull meat are to be developed by examining the performance potential during rearing and fattening as well as the economic evaluation.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
