Project Title

KI-supported detection and selective removal of infested potato plants

Project description

Concept development

In this project, an autonomous vehicle with built-in tools is being developed that recognizes all virus, bacterial and fungal diseases in potatoes known in Europe by their symptoms and immediately removes the infected plants in accordance with the seed potato regulation.

The greatest added value of the project lies in replacing and supporting the dwindling number of trained practitioners and selectors (clean-up personnel), who can recognize infested plants by their disease symptoms through visual inspection of the crop. At the same time, the new system speeds up work processes and makes them independent of daylight and weather conditions. The system to be trained for the detection of infestation characteristics is designed to improve accuracy to up to 100 % and detect diseased plants at all stages of growth. The practitioner uses the device as a substitute for manpower and for comprehensive statistical monitoring and mapping of plant diseases. The system works independently and reduces the spread of infestations preventively or in suspected cases by intervening quickly.
