Project Title

Economical climate adaptation through water management photovoltaics

Project description

Concept development

As a result of climate change, drought is on the increase, especially in the particularly dry Rhön-Grabfeld region. It's not just the plants that are lacking rain. The soil's ability to absorb water is also decreasing. At the same time, rainfall events are becoming increasingly heavy. When it rains, this often leads to soil erosion and flooding. Moreover, the use of groundwater for field irrigation is only permitted to a limited extent in many places. Rainwater reservoirs for water as a continuous irrigation option for agriculture and also as preventive flood protection offer a solution here from a purely technical point of view, but the challenge is that they must also be economical.

The project deals with the question of what contribution Photovoltaic systems can make to the agricultural utilisation of soils by shading and protecting water surfaces from evaporation, while at the same time generating an economic yield through electricity generation. Photovoltaics should make it possible to operate these agricultural areas and thus the possibility of rainwater collection, storage and irrigation economically.
