Sustainable development of fish feed for salmonids

Concept development

Industrially produced fish feed in pellet form contains ingredients such as grains, algae, and fish meal, ideally providing all the nutrients that farmed fish need. However, to save costs, lower-quality ingredients are sometimes used, which can compromise the quality of the feed. Common feed mixtures are often aimed at the mass market and do not take into account the specific needs of individual fish species. The composition of the feed, particularly its protein content, influences both feed efficiency and the ecological footprint of the final product. Under similar conditions, feed efficiency and sustainability can vary significantly depending on the ingredients and their sources.

The goal of this project is to develop an ecologically and more environmentally friendly feed for salmonids that can be used for various species and life stages. Since resources such as fish meal and fish oil are limited in availability and associated with negative environmental impacts, the product should either be completely free from fish meal or minimize its use compared to traditionally utilized feeds.
