Fertilizer Production through Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) of Sewage Sludge
Concept development
Many farmers are heavily dependent on mineral fertilisers from abroad, the prices of which have tripled in recent times, putting pressure on value creation in arable farming.
To address these issues, farmers are increasingly seeking suitable technologies and concepts to retain nutrients regionally and save costs through sustainable nutrient recycling. Sewage sludge contains valuable nutrients, especially phosphorus, but is unfortunately regarded as a problematic residue due to its high pollutant load. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of sewage sludge offers a promising solution: it neutralizes contaminants and recovers phosphate for agricultural use. The sewage sludge is carbonized in a pressure-resistant reactor, the phosphate is washed out, and it precipitates as struvite. This process could significantly enhance value creation in arable farming through low production costs for high-quality phosphate fertilizers and regional availabilty.
