Project Title

OnFarm Weather

Project description

The main objective was to make the quality of weather data transparent and to avoid incorrect measurements in the service providers' databases. To this end, three sensors are used for each weather parameter, allowing the plausibility of each measurement to be checked.

The system is still in the testing phase and is being continuously developed. A total of 16 prototypes have been built. The modular weather stations allow farmers to easily replace individual components.

The status of the measurement network and weather data can be viewed on the website wetter.eip-agrar-sh.de. The data is also transmitted to ISIP (isip.de) and fed into forecast models and decision-making tools that farmers in the region use to optimize their inventory management.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The concept of redundant measurement at a single location has proven effective in detecting measurement errors and increasing reliability. This makes maintenance more targeted and cost-effective, and prevents incorrect measurements from entering the database.

In addition to raw data, the stations provide daily calculated derived variables based on local weather data. For this purpose, a simulation model was developed that simulates potential evapotranspiration according to FAO standards, soil water balance in different soil layers (based on DSSAT 4.0), and soil temperatures (analogous to the EPIC model). The influence of snow cover on percolation and evaporation is taken into account according to the Daisy model from Denmark.
