Project Title

Rough-stalked Meadow Grass

Project description

The aim of the project was to develop an online tool to promote sustainable and resource-efficient grassland use. The tool provides location-specific strategies for preventing and controlling unwanted species, in particular common bluegrass.

To this end, the extent of bluegrass spread on practical areas in Schleswig-Holstein was first recorded in order to identify the most important influencing factors and develop a prediction model for assessing the risk of spread. At the same time, control measures were tested on practical areas and grass mixtures were examined in terms of their competitiveness and underlying mechanisms of action.

The results of all subprojects were incorporated into the online tool, which assesses the risk potential for specific areas and offers concrete, site-specific recommendations for action.

Results focusing on practiceorientation

The project provided comprehensive data on the distribution of common bluegrass in permanent grassland in Schleswig-Holstein for the first time. The results from 2019 showed that water availability at the site is crucial for its spread. Intensive grassland management is necessary, as patchy and weak-growing grass cover is quickly colonized by bluegrass.

Based on the subprojects and in cooperation with the EIP project “Nutrient-efficient land use concepts for grassland sites” of the Schleswig-Holstein Chamber of Agriculture, the digital advisory tool “Grünlandportal Schleswig-Holstein” (Schleswig-Holstein Grassland Portal) was developed. It is available as a desktop version and as a mobile app for Android and iOS.
