Organic vegetables: Enabling regional cultivation, creating jobs for people with disabilities, shaping processing, developing sales.
The need for fresh organic vegetables in northern Hesse cannot be covered by regional cultivation. Various difficulties in terms of climate, farming practices, availability of seasonal labor, and processing structures complicate the integration of agricultural enterprises in this segment. The main objective of the project is to establish a regional value chain for organically grown fine vegetables, which is created through the cooperation of 3 partnership groups. An innovative approach of the project is to integrate the fine vegetable cultivation into the agricultural crop rotation. Typically, fine vegetables are grown in nurseries that are hardly established in northern Hesse. In order to serve the potential sales, various innovative concepts are developed and tested for their suitability for practical use. This includes labor organization, cultivation of site-adapted species, special counseling modules and job creation for people with disabilities. For the workshop workers of the Hephata Diakonie, the project enables a new meaningful activity and thus a further step of inclusion.
The main result is the establishment of a regional value chain (VAC). The organic lettuce crop tested proved to be unsuitable for the composition of the WSK due to its rapid perishability and the associated time pressure. Hokkaido pumpkin, on the other hand, is very suitable for storage. What is special about the regional VAC that has been established is the integration of people with disabilities as an important and sustainable element. It became clear that VACs run linearly in one direction. Everyone looks to the next link and adapts to their wishes. The partner in decline has more power thanks to the high level of supply. A major problem arises when producers and their needs are not considered. One solution is to design VAC in a circular way within the food system. This helps to counteract the alienation between consumers and agricultural producers and serves as a driver for the establishment of sustainable production systems.
