Project Title

Local groundwater recharge (implementation)

Project description

Climate change is increasing the need for artificial irrigation in agriculture. Increased precipitation extremes (long dry periods interrupted by heavy rainfall) lead to an impairment of local groundwater recharge. The project develops and evaluates a practical concept for Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) in the Gäuboden region. The aim is to determine under which geological and regulatory conditions water can be stored in the subsurface aquifer and made available during dry periods. Key results include a site assessment framework, an implementation-oriented operation and monitoring concept, and the evaluation of a volume-equivalent MAR approach using surface water. The economic assessment compares investment and operational costs with long-term avoided yield risks. The project provides clear recommendations for planning, permitting, and implementing infiltration measures in an agricultural context.
