Project Title

SewCarbFert (implementation)

Project description

Farmers are increasingly seeking suitable technologies and concepts to retain nutrients regionally and save costs through sustainable nutrient recycling. Sewage sludge contains valuable nutrients, especially phosphorus. However, it is unfortunately regarded as a problematic residue due to its high pollutant load. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of sewage sludge offers a promising solution: it neutralizes contaminants and recovers phosphate for agricultural use. The goal of the project is to install a HTC pilot plant at a sewage treatment plant and run a pilot. Nutrient recovery is meanwhile to be continuously optimized in terms of technology and processes. Furthermore, shall the resulting fertilizers and hydrocarbons be marketed. For the latter point, the fertilizers are being tested in a multi-year field trial.
