NAWATI – Sustainable Water Use in Livestock Farms

Project description

Dairy cattle and horse farms in Hesse are increasingly facing the challenge of using water efficiently, sustainably and in compliance with legal requirements. Climate change, longer periods of drought and increasing water demand in livestock farming are intensifying the situation. At the same time, many farms lack practical data on water consumption, water quality and internal water flows. As a result, potential savings remain unused and sustainable water management is difficult to implement. NAWATI therefore develops an integrated and practical water management approach for livestock farms. Farm-level water balances will be established, all relevant water flows recorded and the quality of fresh, rain and process water assessed. Based on this information, individual water management plans and a practical, legally compliant catalogue of measures will be developed. The aim is to reduce drinking water consumption, use available water resources more efficiently and strengthen the climate resilience of livestock farms.
