Project Title

BiSoN – Bee-friendly New Dual-purpose Sorghum Varieties

Project description

Sorghum has potential as a drought-tolerant alternative to maize for silage production and as a summer flowering crop. However, this potential is currently only partly utilised because existing varieties are not sufficiently adapted to regional conditions and requirements. At the same time, farms in Hesse face the challenge of adapting to heat and drought while promoting biodiversity. Pollinators experience food shortages during the summer, as flowering crops with high forage value are still not widely grown in Hesse. BiSoN aims to develop stress-tolerant, locally adapted dual-purpose sorghum varieties and bee-friendly variety mixtures. Increased pollen production and extended flowering periods are intended to combine versatile utilisation with improved climate adaptation. The mixtures will be scientifically assessed with regard to their benefits for pollinators, agronomic suitability and economic viability and tested together with participating farms.
