GrassValue – Miscanthus XOS for Enhanced Feed Efficiency and Fibres for Climate-Friendly Construction

Project description

Agriculture and the construction sector face major challenges. Rising feed costs and the EU ban on antibiotic growth promoters increase the need for alternative feed additives in livestock production. At the same time, the construction sector needs to replace fossil-based and energy-intensive materials with climate-friendly alternatives. GrassValue develops a regional cascading use of Miscanthus biomass with the aim of achieving high-value material utilisation. Natural xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) are extracted from Miscanthus as a feed additive to support gut health and feed efficiency in poultry. The remaining plant fibres will be used to develop bio-based construction materials. The project aims to strengthen regional agriculture and the bioeconomy, establish new regional value chains, replace fossil and mineral resources and create additional opportunities for agricultural land use.
