HESPA – Securing Seed Potato Production in Hesse – Maintaining and Strengthening Hessian Seed Potato Production with Threshold Values and Practical Approaches
The spread of the reed glassy-winged leafhopper (SGFZ) is increasingly threatening potato production in Hesse and Germany. The insect can transmit pathogens that may cause severe yield losses and quality problems in seed potatoes. The project aims to secure seed potato production in Hesse despite increasing SGFZ infestation. The pathogens PHYPSO and ARSEPH will be quantitatively analysed by qPCR at the level of individual tubers. Seed potato quality will be assessed by combining pathogen concentrations with germination behaviour. Based on field trials and laboratory analyses, the project will determine a tolerable pathogen concentration in seed potatoes. The results will provide farms with greater planning security for on-farm propagation and seed production and create a reliable data basis for further technical and policy decisions.
