Project Title

Grashähnchen - Alternative utilization concepts for permanent grassland in Lower Saxony

Project description

Permanent grassland is widespread in Lower Saxony, but its economic use is often limited, especially in regions with low livestock density. Meanwhile, broiler diets heavily rely on soybean meal as a protein source. The EIP project "Grashähnchen" is investigating whether protein derived from permanent grassland could serve as a regional alternative. To this end, the project examines the entire process chain—from grassland management and the production of protein concentrate to digestibility and feeding trials and, ultimately, slaughter. In addition to animal performance and meat quality, the project evaluates the economic and environmental impacts. The project aims to determine the practical and economic viability of using permanent grassland in this manner in Lower Saxony, identify new opportunities for grassland use, and boost the regional protein supply.
