GESUND - Reduction of intestinal colonization by multidrug-resistant foodborne pathogens in broiler chickens using targeted bacteriophage therapy
The project aims to test the use of bacteriophages to reduce the colonization of poultry with MDR Enterobacteria and zoonotic pathogens, as well as the spread of MDR plasmids by bacteria. The use of phages as a non-antibiotic measure should be able to be integrated into existing hygiene concepts. On one hand, we will evaluate phages that are specific for important zoonotic pathogens like Campylobacter spp., and on the other hand, we will test phages that target receptors on Enterobacteria. With this approach, we could not only specifically kill MDR bacteria in the poultry gut, but also trigger the loss of MDR-encoding plasmids, leading to a return to antibiotic sensitivity in the intestinal bacteria. Using phage cocktails should help prevent the potential development of resistance in the bacterial target population. Furthermore, it’s being studied whether taking a probiotic by mouth at the same time can prevent pathogenic or resistant bacteria from settling in the gut after phage therapy, instead of the killed Enterobacteriaceae or Campylobacter.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
