Project Title

FLASH-APPLE Fluorescence-based AI monitoring system for safe apple storage, ensuring quality and resource efficiency

Project description

The FLASH-APPLE project addresses the central dilemma of modern apple storage: the highly effective DCA storage (Dynamic Controlled Atmosphere) carries the existential risk of a total loss due to fermentation if the individual oxygen threshold of the fruit is undershot. Current monitoring systems are purely reactive. The Operational Group is therefore introducing a novel, single-fruit-based fluorescence sensor system into practice as a proactive early warning system. The overarching goal is to further develop this technology into an AI-supported, predictive decision-support system (“Digital Twin”) that forecasts storage risks and provides management recommendations. This will safeguard the high investments of the farms, maximize product quality, reduce food losses, and sustainably strengthen the competitiveness of Northern German fruit production.
