Project Title

LARF-Pick (Larvae as a regional feed source for poultry)

Project description

Poultry is the most common farm animal in Germany, and poultry meat production has nearly doubled over the past 20 years. Besides meat, eggs are of major importance, with Germany ranking among the EU’s leading egg producers. Free-range and organic farming have also steadily increased.

To make livestock production more sustainable, insects are emerging as an alternative protein source for human and animal nutrition. The project aims to improve animal health and welfare in Rhineland-Palatinate and Germany while reducing the protein feed gap through the use of insect-based feed. Regional livestock producers could integrate insect larvae into closed-loop systems, providing a sustainable, needs-based feed source for their animals.

In collaboration with the participating organizations, the project will strengthen the knowledge base on the opportunities and effects of insect-based poultry feed. Scientific findings will be tested on OG member farms to assess their practical applicability. The results will provide a sound basis for clear recommendations to farmers on the use of insects in poultry nutrition.
