ReproFly - Fully automated breeding of black soldier flies
A promising approach to the sustainable use of biological waste materials is the use of black soldier flies. In recent years, industrial units for fattening fly larvae on farms have therefore been developed. Until now, however, farmers have had to purchase the larvae from specialized producers. Long delivery routes can result in high losses of larvae. Fluctuating numbers of young larvae make it difficult to scale up biomass production. The project is using camera recordings and machine learning approaches to develop an automatic sex separation system for female and male soldier flies. The process is intended to enable the targeted adjustment of gender ratios in the cages, thus contributing to consistently good breeding results. The ReproFly concept aims to enable farmers to produce the required quantity of young larvae for their own farms with little effort. The system has a high degree of automation and is scalable.
Results and the Final report will be found here, as soon as the project is completed.
