Project Title

Vitis BB - Development of a vine assortment for Brandenburg with drought-, frost- and fungus-resistant varieties with testing of existing historical v

Project description

The ongoing climate changes have a significant impact on the vegetation period in viticulture. As a result, not only early grape varieties, but also medium and late grape varieties are reaching physiological maturity. However, it should be noted that the continental climate influence in Brandenburg remains. Furthermore, the future use of water in the region will become a limiting factor with direct effects on the selection criteria in viticulture. In this project, the focus is on testing modern PIWI vines for their drought and frost tolerance, while historical Vitis vinifera varieties are to be tested for their resistance to fungal diseases. In this way, both traditional and innovative approaches to viticulture can be integrated. These studies are crucial to ensure the long-term success of viticulture in the region and at the same time to meet the challenges of climate change.
