Roots and Robots: Evaluation of innovative methods for establishing trees in agroforestry systems

Project description

Agroforestry systems (AFS) have great potential to mitigate the effects of climate change on agriculture. The integration of trees into agricultural land can contribute to soil stabilisation, water retention and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. However, implementation in practice is often difficult. In particular, the successful establishment of agroforests in the first three years is a challenge, as many new plants have high failure rates and moderate tree growth. The necessary replanting and maintenance work is labour-intensive and costly and repeatedly leads to a decision against the establishment of agroforestry systems in agricultural practice. Roots & Robots therefore aims to test and evaluate innovative measures for the successful establishment of agroforestry systems. The project has two objectives: Firstly, different planting qualities and secondly, the influence of mycorrhiza will be investigated at two practice partners. Thirdly, an innovative field robot for efficient weed management will be developed and tested.
