Project Title

Environmentally friendly, efficient and climate-resilient potato cultivation system for Bavaria (concept development)

Project description

Concept development

The problems in potato cultivation have worsened significantly in recent years. In addition to the long-known challenges such as erosion, soil compaction, pesticide use and nitrate shift, drought and heat stress, damage caused by new types of diseases and the formation of sprouts have become particularly worrying issues since 2018. These developments often lead to uncertain and unsatisfactory yields and quality, which is why more and more potato farmers are questioning whether to continue cultivation.

The aim of the project is to develop an integrated, climate-resilient cultivation system. Individual aspects include a modified ridge design to reduce surface run-off, sowing barley in emerging potato crops, row fertilisation with mineral fertiliser or compost, sowing to absorb residual nitrogen in maturing crops and direct planting in green summer ridges. The systemic approach pursued in this project integrates existing components and incorporates new developments in agricultural technology and new varieties, thereby creating synergy effects.
