Project Title

Farm animals in climate change - Strategies to avoid relevant greenhouse gases from agriculture and adapta-tion strategies in animal feeding.

Project description

The effects of climatic changes having already a major impact on the agriculture in Rheinland-Pfalz. The environmental conditions for plants, soils and livestock are currently being affected by changing temperatures, precipitation and increased CO2 concentrations. Against this background, the efficient use of resources and the avoidance of nitrogen excretion also play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas formation in animal husbandry. The possibilities for reduction of methane emission from dairy cows are also increasingly becoming the focus of economy and politics. The EIP-project NuKliWa deals with strategies to avoid environmentally relevant greenhouse gasses and efficient nitrogen use (subprojects V1-V5) as well as possible adaption strategies for animal husbandry to climate change (subproject A1-A6) in the context of animal feeding. The aim is the development of innovative feeding strategies that have high potential to reduce both environmentally relevant nitrogen excretion from monogastric livestock (pigs, poultry) and methane production in the rumen of ruminants.
